Microneedling: Rebuilding collagen to renew skin’s smoothness and glow
Your skin is a sum of many parts. It is made up of numerous building blocks, including collagen (for firmness) and elastin (for elasticity). Due to the ageing process and UV/sun damage effects, these structural components in the skin break down. Fortunately, Ama Sandhar and the team at The Facial House in Whitby, Ontario, have the technologies and techniques to rebuild the skin from deep within. Technology-assisted treatments like microneedling improve the appearance of a wide range of skin concerns arising from collagen and elastin loss.
What is microneedling?
Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling involves using a special handpiece that makes tiny “microchannels” within the skin. As the body closes those microchannels, many wonderful things occur. As the skin heals, collagen and elastin are induced. These natural proteins provide structure and elasticity to the skin. But, with age, our bodies produce less of it.
By jumpstarting its production, Ama and our skilled team can correct the appearance of:
- Depressed or creased areas, such as big pores, lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, and scars
- Saggy or lax areas; for instance, the “jowls” may be treated to recontour and restore definition to the jawline and chin
- Signs of sun damage, such as dark discolouration or “age spots”

What does treatment feel like?
Treatment is generally well-tolerated by our patients. Your comfort is our priority, with all treatments available at our office. To start, a numbing topical or anesthetic is applied to cleansed skin. Once the treatment areas are fully numb, the microneedling handpiece is used. The needles themselves are very fine and will go to work underneath the skin’s surface, stimulating healing processes and the production of collagen and elastin. Microneedling is highly customizable. So, everything from the depth of the needles to the total number of “passes” required to complete treatment is personalized to your specific needs and for your safety, comfort, and to support optimal results.

What will my skin look and feel like after treatment?
Your skin may look red and swollen at first, similar to a sunburn. You may also experience pinpoint bleeding and scabs, crusting, flaking, tightness, and sensitivity as your skin heals. This is normal as your skin’s protective barrier is naturally repaired. It’s important to follow any instructions provided by our team for after-care. We can also advise on good products to boost your results, and those results may be seen within a few days. Due to how collagen and elastin are “remodelled,” improvements get better with time, with optimal results visible with repeat treatments and in the months following your last treatment.
